Facilities: Residential, Solar and Geothermal

Kyle Thomas’ 1800 sq ft home, located in densely populated downtown Syracuse, boasts an already-functioning 6.44 kW solar PV system. But 248 Bryant Ave has more than meets the eye: it is in mid-installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system. The system will consist of a 4-ton combination heat pump (water-to-water/water-to-air), and two 300-ft closed vertical ground loop heat exchangers.

Kyle Thomas decided to install a geothermal system as a case study project to demonstrate the possibility of geothermal adaptations in an urban environment. And sure enough, the project is presenting some challenges for him and his team to solve.

The confined nature and small size of the site necessitated drilling for a vertical ground loop system (as opposed to a horizontal loop). However, the confined nature of the site also makes accessing the property with a drill rig a challenge. Kyle is in negotiations with two companies and will hopefully be drilling soon.

Kyle plans for the solar to meet not only his current household demand, but also the increase in demand the geothermal/heat pump system will incur.  Come support him in his journey to Net Zero!
